Leeuwen Mansions, Bo Kaap

Bo-Kaap, or Schotchekloof as it’s also known, is traditionally a Muslim neighbourhood.  It was formerly known as the “Malay Quarter” because its inhabitants were descended from former slaves brought here from Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Malasia by the Dutch settlers.  Bo-Kaap lies at the foot of Signal HIll and just above the Cape Town city centre.

Here you’ll find houses from as early as the eighteenth century, quaint cobble roads and the first Mosque established in Cape Town.  Today it is a multicultural neighbourhood with comfortable accommodation, cosmopolitan restaurants and many small businesses

Leeuwen Mansions is a small apartment block in Leeuwen Street.  It was built in 1937 by the Abrahams family and was in their ownership until it sold as separate sections in 2004.  Many apartments are owner occupied but some are available as self-catering accommodation or on long leases.
